Awareness. Compassion. Connection.
Deepen your mindfulness practice with classes, retreats & mentoring
Hi there and welcome! I’m Tobie Whitman and have been practicing Vipassana meditation since 2010 and yoga since 2000. I teach about mindfulness in a variety of settings, including community organizations, schools, government agencies, religious institutions, and workplaces. My teaching approach is informed by the Buddhist mediation tradition (Theravada), contemporary mindfulness practices, somatic awareness, and a deep appreciation for the ways mindfulness can support us in daily life. I am a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-200) and am completing the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certificate Program with Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield this year.
I have taught through Flow Yoga Studio, National Geographic Magazine, Insight Mediation Community of Washington DC, the Department of Homeland Security, N Street Village, Calvary Women’s Services, Adas Israel synagogue and others. I customize every session to meet the needs of participants. Contact me to explore how I can support your mindfulness practice.
Specific topics of expertise include:
Yoga, mindful movement & breath work
Yoga, mindful movement, and breathwork help strengthen our awareness of subtle internal cues—like a racing heart, shallow breath, or tight jaw. From this bodily awareness we learn to recognize emotions as they arise, creating space to respond with intention rather than react automatically.
Tobie offers customized yoga instruction to individuals and groups, often integrating mindful movement, breathing and guided meditations. She teaches in diverse settings, from workplaces to religious institutions to community service organizations to international wellness retreats. She has practiced a range of yoga styles for over 25 years and uses her broad knowledge to customize experiences for students.
Outdoor nature experiences
Regular exposure to natural environments has been associated with improvements in mood, attention, sleep, stress levels, and overall well-being.
Mindful nature workshops combine guided meditation, walking meditation, and periods of silent reflection to awaken your senses and cultivate a deeper sense of present moment awareness. Tobie will guide you to notice the sights, sounds, textures, and patterns of nature while exploring simple mindfulness practices that support nervous system regulation.
You'll discover how nature can become both a refuge and a teacher as well as provide feelings of awe in even small doses.
Mindful flower arranging workshops
In these unique workshop offerings, we combine sensory awareness activities with simple floral design to cultivate creativity, presence, and a deeper connection to the local environment and seasonality.
Tobie is the Founder of Little Acre Flowers, DC’s only 100% locally sourcing florist, and all greenery and flowers are sourced from nearby farms for workshops — fresh, beautiful and seasonal. Participants leave with a beautiful, hand arranged vase and a new sense of rootedness.
Kind words for Tobie
“I cannot say enough about Tobie as a teacher- she is compassionate, funny, intelligent- and by engaging the class in short activities, and speaking honestly (and with empathy) from her own experience, she is able to connect and inspire.” - eileen w.
“She was prepared for each class which made the time feel special and more sacred…hard to achieve on zoom! Tobie had a calm demeanor and answered each question thoughtfully. It was a great experience and a wonderful pause in the busy workday.” - rachel s.
“I love this class! I love the pace, the tie in with the calendar and the lovely poems. It has helped me feel so much calmer in my day to day. ”
